He became the first Franco-American Senate President, serving from 1993 to 1994. In 2012, he was inducted into the Maine State Franco-American Hall of Fame. 1990 Field Hockey State Champions

The 1990 Biddeford High School Girls' Field Hockey team began the season as underdogs, led by Head Coach Madeleine Goulet. With only five seniors and a 9-4-1 regular-season record, the Tigers were inexperienced and had never won a playoff game. However, the team was determined to prove their potential. Entering the tournament as the number three seed, they quickly defied expectations, defeating the second-seeded Thornton Academy 2-0 in the quarterfinals and the Sanford Spartans 1-0 in the semifinals.

On Halloween day, the Tigers faced the number one-seeded South Portland Red Riots, a team they had lost to twice during the regular season. In a stunning display of resilience, they triumphed 1-0 to become Western Maine Regional Champions. But the ultimate challenge awaited them: the Maine State Championship game against the three-time defending champions, the Cony Rams.

On a perfect 70-degree day at Oak Hill High School, the Tigers, led by Captains Carey Doran, Nicole Dube, and Kelly Foss, took the field with unwavering confidence. The game was hard-fought, but the Tigers played with a fierce determination that couldn’t be matched. In the final moments, they secured a 2-1 victory, capturing their first-ever Maine State Field Hockey Championship.

As Journal Tribune columnist Karen Beaudoin put it, “But the Tigers dared to believe. They had the inner drive that showed them how to make miracles happen and never doubted their abilities. They had a desire to win so deep, they would never back down, and an immense pride in both themselves and the black-and-orange uniforms they wore. They began as long shots. They wound up champions.” From long shots to champions, the 1990 Biddeford Tigers proved that anything is possible with heart, belief, and the courage to dream big.
