Biddeford Learns After School Together!
LearningWorks AfterSchool and Summer Programs are free education programs that serve students in grades 2 – 5 at six schools in Portland and Biddeford.

What: A chance to master the basics and explore new experiences after school. Teachers take the best of the school day; add hands-on enrichment activities, resulting in more academic confidence for students.

When: AfterSchool Program:  Monday – Thursday, September – May
Summer Program: 4 – 5 weeks in late summer.

How: 21st Century Funding and other charitable support makes LearningWorks AfterSchool and Summer programs available at no cost to families. Transportation and snack is included.

Why: Success in school equals success in life.

Where: Portland: East End Community School, Ocean Avenue Elementary, Presumpscot, and Reiche Elementary Schools.

Biddeford: Biddeford Primary and Intermediate Schools.

Program Curriculum: LearningWorks AfterSchool collaborates with school-day teaching staff to develop a curriculum focused around STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Math). The curriculum is designed to be highly engaging, hands-on, and relevant to students.

Technology: To enhance student learning, students use iPads, Smart Boards, and other technology to conduct research, enforce skills, and share learning through presentations and online blogs.

Field Trips & Guest Speakers: To give students opportunities to broaden their background knowledge and experiences in the areas of STEM and the arts, LearningWorks Afterschool goes on field trips and invites guest speakers into the classroom.

Celebrations of Learning: A culminating event at the end of each unit of study where students demonstrate key learnings for parents, teachers, and the community.

Research-Based: Programming is developed based on research designed to help low-performing students build thinking skills and expose them to new ideas, concepts and experiences.

Community Partners: LearningWorks Afterschool and Summer Programs collaborate with area partners such as Biddeford School Department, Portland Public Schools, Portland Museum of Art, Mayo Street Arts, Community Bike Center, and the University of New England.
